Maskne is the New Acne, here's what you should do.

-
Wearing masks is our ‘thing’ for more than a year now and has become part of our daily routine since forever (hahaha). However, a new skin condition came upon wearing masks all the time and this is known as “maskne” (mask acne). Though we’re sure that masks will be used for a little more time and if you’re currently having breakouts or interested to know about maskne, we
suggest you read on as we unveil the causes and how we can prevent this newest ‘skin’ problem.
-
PROBLEM, Identified.
-
Since we ‘ALL’ have different types of skin and conditions may vary, the exact cause of your skin problem may differ, though in most cases, acne is the result of dead skin cells getting trapped in your skin instead of being shed into the environment, what we know at the moment is that wearing masks for prolonged periods can create new skin issues or make existing skin conditions (like acne) worse.
-
As we all know we already have oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells on our skin (esp for those who live in the metro), but wearing a mask, makes these substances build up more and block our pores. Furthermore, for active men and women, the mask also traps humidity due to your breathing and sweating, which may increase the risk of acne. Finally, another possible cause is friction. (YES FRICTION!) The material of a mask can rub against your skin, leading to rashes and irritation.

THE SOLUTION, from the expert.
-
We talked to MJ Jamias, CEO/ FOUNDER of MARIA JAINELI SKINCARE COMPANY INC. and a Research Cosmetic Scientist of Japonesa Brand, and here are her suggestions:

A. According to MJ the use of a gentle cleanser that is free of fragrance and oil is critical to avoid acne breakouts, even in regular situations. “Don’t forget to rinse with lukewarm water”, she added. The use of Japonesa® soap will help because it contains safe and gentle ingredients, plus it has Lactoferrin, which can be used because it has an antibacterial agent.
-

B. MJ ably mentioned that we should all use a soap that is heavy on moisture as it will not only give you extra hydration but will also give your skin additional protection. Moisture can also play an important role to avoid skin chaffing.

C. Finally, she ‘MJ’ motioned if we can take a break from make-up at least during days when we don’t need to.

Though it’ll be also important to wear a Moisturizer before putting on your mask, we also

recommend the following considerations when choosing the right mask:

  •  It should fit snugly, but should not be too tight
  •  It should be made of cotton or any natural or soft fabric
  • It has two or more layers of fabric
Don’t forget that it is best to consult your skin doctor if things get way beyond your control.

See you next ish!
